The Weekend Wrap-Up

A weekly recap post linking up with:

SUNDAY POST | THE SUNDAY SALON | IT’S MONDAY, WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Thank you to Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer | Deb @ Readerbuzz | Kathryn @ The Book Date for hosting! Please visit them to join the fun. What have you been up to this week?

Happy Mid-Year! We’ve had a lot of rain here, which I love, and a bit cooler weather (70s/80s). Not bad for this time of year. šŸŒ§ļø

This past week my project was to consolidate all of the blogs I follow into Feedly. Before, I was following all over the place ā€” Blogger Reader, WordPress Reader, and Bloglovin. Feedly seems easy to use, plus I like their app. Emojis look a little wonky in their post previews, but I can live with that. I’ll keep the other readers as backup though. How do you keep track of blogs you follow?

A bit of news from Instagram on Wednesday: They said the platform is “no longer a photo-sharing app,” and part of their future plan is to focus on videos due to competition from TikTok, YouTube, etc. You can view the announcement here: Changes are coming to video on Instagram.

As a Bookstagrammer too, I’m leery of this news. I don’t know what it means for us. Will the algorithm hide regular photo posts to push videos, even from accounts you don’t follow? I mean, I love TikTok, it’s fun, but I love Instagram because it’s not TikTok. I guess we wait and see. šŸ¤”

What I’ve Read Recently:

WHAT’S DONE IN DARKNESS by Laura McHugh (āāāāĀ½)

What I’m Currently Reading:

KILL ALL YOUR DARLINGS by David Bell (Thriller)
šŸŽ§ SECOND SLEEP by Diane Stanley (Middle Grade Mystery)

Thanks for stopping by & have a wonderful weekend! ā€” š““š“²š“Ŗš“·š“Ŗ

  1. I wonder what they mean on Instagram. I never post there any more, just look to see what friends & family have posted.

  2. I use Bloglovin and Feedly – Bloglovin for book blogs and Feedly for food and other stuff. I probably like Feedly better and if I picked one it’d probably be that one but I’m too lazy to combine at the moment! I wish Instagram would get rid of all the Algorithms. I just want to see what the people I follow post! Have a great week!

  3. I wish you could share the rain and cooler weather with me. I am glad you found a place to follow blogs. I’ve heard good things about Feedly. I tried it for a short while. I settled on Inoreader in the end and am quite happy with it. I don’t follow enough blogs to have to pay (not sure I’d want to have to pay, honestly) so it suits me.

I hadn’t heard that about Instagram. Although I have an account, I rarely am on Instagram. I just don’t like the format. It’s so popular though! So I’m really surprised they would make a move like this. Hopefully it won’t be as drastic a change as it sounds. I know a lot of bloggers who switched to Instagram and I would hate for that to be ruined for them. :-( I’ve never used Tik Tok, can you believe?

I hope you are enjoying your reading! Let me know what you think of Second Sleep. My daughter might like that one.

    Have a great week!

    • I have a love/hate relationship with TikTok. It can be a big time waster, but I keep it because my two teens and I have a good time sending funny clips to each other. I love those bonding moments, and with teens that can be a challenge!

Second Sleep is off to a good start. I’m very curious about the mystery of the kids’ missing mom. Can’t wait to see how it plays out!

  4. I love the photos at the beginning of your post, of PRB paintings. Their paintings, and those of painters associated with them, are jewels that glow. I first saw PRB paintings at the Tate Gallery, breathtaking. I don’t use Instagram but hope the changes are OK for you.

  5. It’s hard to believe it’s mid- year already! Wow. And I did not see that about Instagram. Wow, I’m curious now to see what that bodes for the future over there… hmmm.

  6. I’ve noticed recently that my Instagram feed is consisting more of “Reels” and I hate it so much! I usually like to have a quick scroll down Instagram when I have a spare minute and I just don’t want to waste time having to watch videos. I’m not a fan of Tiktok either because I was wasting away so much time on it, so I ended up deleting it and I’m so much happy for it.

    • Yes! I’ve noticed the same thing with my Instagram feed ā€” reel after reel after reel. I’m just not a fan of video clips there. I’ve also noticed the engagement rate on my photo posts has gone down recently, and that’s probably why.

  7. Yeah, I wondered about that from IG, too. Like, I enjoy looking at photos, and I also enjoy TikTok because it’s different. I don’t really want to watch videos on IG, though…

I also use Feedly for my blog subscriptions, but I’ll keep up with WordPress reader as well, as it’s just right there when I go on my own blog.

Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

  8. Too much social media overwhelms me, so I visit Instagram about once every month and Twitter when I see that someone has tagged me there. I’ve never taken on TikTok or YouTube. I stick to the media I love most—blogs. It’s worrisome to see that Instagram is making changes.

I check my Google feeds to see what other bloggers are doing, but I miss a lot, I think. It used to be so easy with Blogger. Sigh.

Second Sleep looks good. I’m always looking for promising new kids’ books.

    • I’ve been cutting back on my social media this past year. My favorites are Goodreads and Instagram, and blogs too. It’s hard to keep up with all of them though.

I’m intrigued by the mystery in Second Sleep. It’s got some magical elements as well. Can’t wait to see how it plays out.

  9. Glad that it’s been cooler with you – I’ve been following some of the insanely hot temperatures around the world with huge concern… As for us, still spells of sunshine and rain – and mostly temperatures in the mid-60s, which I haven’t been complaining about quite so much, recently. Have a great week, Diana.

  10. I am disappointed that Instagram is moving away from photos. I only want to share videos very occasionally. Or maybe just I don’t like change.

I’ve used Feedly for years…when I get a chance to bloghop that is!

  11. I only use the wordpress reader to follow blogs, but I’ve heard good things about Feedly. In any case, it makes sense to consolidate to one medium. Sorry to hear about Instagram. I don’t use it myself, but seeing how popular Booktube is, perhaps they have to do something. Happy Sunday!

    • WordPress reader is great! So easy to comment & like posts on WP blogs. Yeah, it seems like videos are becoming more popular with book reviewers. I just don’t have time to watch!

  12. I use Bloglovin.
I seldom use my Instagram account, and only occasionally take a look.
Used to be a big Twitter user but got so fed up with all the nasty politics last year I stopped going there.
I use FB mainly to see what friends are up to and more so to follow a lot of travel and food bloggers that I don’t want to add to Bloglovin.

  13. I use Feedly. I tried another reader that I actually liked better…don’t remember the name of it now, sorry…but the problem was it had a LIMIT on how many of my Feedly feeds I could import so it only imported maybe half of them. So, back to Feedly I went.

Thanks for the Insta info. I watched the video you linked to. Hopefully they are just adding more features for videos and not doing away with the square photo features. I’m not a fan of videos and usually scroll right past them. I’m on Insta for the photos. I checked out Tick Tock a couple of times and there are some cute and or funny videos, but way too much JUNK that I have zero interest in. I’m not looking for entertainment on Insta. I’m just scrolling through photos. I like photos. Like you said, we will wait and see.

  14. I go on Instagram every few days, I basically just like to see what book people post. I find it too advertisement-filled at this point. I hope you have a good week!

  15. I use Instagram for photos. I go to TikTok for videos. But I did notice more videos on Instagram lately. I pretty much just scroll past them because I want to see book pictures! Hope you have a good week!

  16. I just found Feedly maybe 6 months ago and I love it. I follow book blogs and authors there. I really like the way it has cut back the emails I get. I can also save things for Read later. I never liked Bloglovin and never used it. Some people follow me on each of those or by WordPress emails or direct emails though.

Facebook is getting harder and harder to see people you want and more ads and junk. I don’t do Instagram but it sounds like it is headed down that path.

I’m glad your weather is nice. We need rain and the next two months are the hot ones.

  17. I hadn’t heard about the Instagram thing. It’s weird because Instagram has always been all about pictures, and that’s what I liked about it. If you want videos, there are other places to go. It doesn’t seem like Instagram is going to really overcome others in that market.

  18. I don’t care for social media period. My IG is pretty much private except for a few family and a few bloggers. FB is family and a few friends as well and I pretty much never post and that’s it! I have the David Bell book on my TBR list this month – hope WE like it!

    • I’m getting that way about social media too. With Facebook, I thought it was fun at first, but as the years past I felt like it cheapened friendship in a way? Like things you used to share one on one were just posted for everyone to see. The personal was gone. Since I deleted FB earlier this year, I’ve actually been connecting more with friends.

  19. Iā€™ve been using Feedly for quite a few years now, I find it more more straightforward than other means, especially since I follow a lot of blogs. I caved to Insta just this year and am posting regularly but not with any intention, I still havenā€™t taken the time to figure out stories or reels. I scroll through TikTok occasionally because I have teens and itā€™s a way of staying up to date on the general trends etc but itā€™s a timesuck. I prefer words to pictures so Twitter is still my preferred social media.

Wishing you a great reading week

    • Part of the reason I keep TikTok is because my teens love sharing clips with me. I love our TikTok bonding moments. :-) I like Twitter ok, but I don’t post much. I don’t have many close connections there, so I feel weird just tweeting out into the void, lol.

  20. That sounds like bummer news about Instagram. Really videos? I like just the photos. Argh! For blogs I like, I just have a list. It’s old-fashioned but it works. ha. cheers.

  21. Oh I hadn’t heard about that for IG. Seems silly as we can get all the videos we want in other places and indeed what will happen to bookstagram. Not in favour!!

  22. I use Bloglovin to follow blogs because it emails me a summary every day. I have a Feedly account but somehow just never fell in love with it. I liked the way you could organize your feeds, but I just ended up wondering if I had missed something or,, I don’t know, its been a while since I checked it.

  24. I’ve used Feedly for years to follow my fave blogs. I like it too. I think it works well for what I use it for.

Instagram news. I had heard something about that change but gosh, I hope it’s not straight videos. If I wanted to be on Tik Tok I would be. I share a lot of reading stuff on Insta so that would be a shame.
